Topic:Certificates of Authenticity - COAs for coins and proof sets
Coin Collector Question:
I have a United States government proof set that has a Certificate of
Authenticity in the box with the coins. I've bought several other years of proof
sets from another dealer and they don't have the Certificate of Authenticity
card with them. Have I been cheated?
Lynn Coins Answer:Not necessarily. Your dealer may be very honest.
The United States mint began including a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) card in proof sets starting with the 1990 sets. The origin of the COA's came about from collector surveys. Collectors stated that they liked the idea of something being included with the proof and mint sets saying that they were the "authentic thing" and really issued by the US government mint. At the time (and sometimes even today) private companies sometimes take genuine coins and put them in a plastic holder to resell. The mint wanted to be sure collectors know when a set is "mint issued" and to distinguish the official mint issued sets from those put together by private companies. This is how the COA's came about in US government issued coin sets.
Note that some years of older mint sets would have a paper insert or card in them advertising the mints services or telling about the set. However, these paper inserts did not have the words "certificate of authenticity" on them.
In summary, most US Mint issued sets minted in 1990 and thereafter will include a COA paper or card.
That brings up another question:
How important are the Certificates of Authenticity papers or cards?
The answer to this question lies in the market place. Many coins that are certified authentic and graded by independent grading services, such as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS are sold in the market without the COAs. Some people consider the condition of the coin to be of much greater importance than any paper that might be included with it.
We agree that one should buy the coin, not the paper COA or box it comes in. However, even so, it makes good sense to take good care of what you have (paper and boxes and COAs) as you never know what tomorrow's market will bring.
